Absolutely right. The movement of the market reflects only the shares changing hands, not the ones being held. While they have most of the shares, no doubt about it, their big moves are not proportionally big. When the market moves people frantically search for a narrative, but even if the narrative they embrace says the market should move in the direction that it's moving, it's not necessarily true, and it won't necessarily correspond to the future like it corresponds to the present/past. So the institutions could sell for some meaningless reason, like their company has a policy that they need to rebalance on the 15th of every other month, or something arbitrary like that. What difference does that truth make? It could make a difference if it becomes widely held belief, say, if somebody at the company leaks a memo saying that's all it was and it doesn't have any implications for the "fair value" or prospects of the stock that got sold. But if people want to believe it was because DeepSeek proved that AI can run on a potato with electrodes jammed into it, the question is what's going to come along and change their mind next? The press has a lot of power here, and so do platforms like this that can silently diminish the reach of certain ideas while amplifying others. It's not so much that there is nothing outside the text, but whatever is out there only matters when it enters into the text. Less Buffett and more Derrida.
