Tbf the normies were already everywhere online when this was uploaded. The time before the normies was over a decade before this upload. That said, I agree with the point, the internet was a more interesting place in a lot of ways back then, and while some communities could be really toxic, those that existed were generally pretty great, if not a bit insular as nerds back then tended to be, what with the whole getting bullied growing up for being a nerd thing that was still prevalent until the late 2000s lol
