Almost everything in a refinery can be reduced to “basically a heater”. These refineries aren’t operated on internet connected networks, they do have local networks, but there is extremely strict IT at all of these plants. A lot of the plants are so old they don’t even have that, just electric wires running a 4-20 Milliamp signal from a DCS control room. It would require more than just a network bug. Source: I work in refinery sales and am in them every single day, including Valero plants. I’m just saying we shouldn’t speculate about this being some form of attack.
